Just some random thoughts as my next birthday approaches. Saturday I will turn 45. Not really that big a deal...I believe the old adage "you're as young as you feel". I ran into an old friend at church Sunday. He was home visiting family for the weekend. We used to play alot of basketball together, so I told him he should have come by the night before and watched our church league games. He asked me if I was coaching!!! He is a few years younger than I am and he had stopped playing after tearing up his knee. I guess he thought I was too old to play now. I don't think it was so much that , as he figured there were probably a lot of guys in their 20s playing. But the conversation made me stop and think. All these years of playing competitive sports from about 9 or 10 years old, playing football, basketball and baseball in high school....not to mention all the backyard games. And all the adult softball leagues and all the basketball I've played, the worst injuries I've ever had are some sprained ankles and only twice were they bad enough to keep me off my feet for any amount of time. I feel very blessed. I mentioned to Richard last night about turning 45 and what I would title this blog. He replied "Hey, 50 is the new 30, not 40" that makes me feel alot better... at least until the next time I take the court agains the 20 and 30 somethings, then I'll begin to feel the age again!!
Well, it's been a week since my last blog....gotta get better if I'm gonna keep this up. Here at Dothan Voice we've been hard at work coming up with ideas to keep improving what is already a great site. One of the ideas we've kicked around is a meet 'n' greet for our members. This would be a great way for those who are curious about some of the people you've met online here to meet some of those people in a setting that is safe and very public, not to mention would be great fun. It would also be an opportunity for us to show some appreciation to any advertiser we have that would be willing to host such an event. What I need is some feedback from the membership here. Tell me what you think, is it a good idea? Would you attend such an event? Would you bring friends? What kind of atmosphere would you like to have, or where would you like to have this event? It's a chance for you guys and gals to participate and help us continue to make this the best site in the area!!!
I don't consider myself a "techie" but like most 40-something kids I love new toys! Since the taxman was good to Stacey this year I decided to get something for myself, a BlackBerry Storm. I've had it barely 24 hours and even though I haven't come close to scratching the surface of what it's capable of , I am already addicted. Thus, the reason they are commonly referred to as CrackBerry's. I spent the better part of last night downloading music to my new toy. I can even log on to DothanVoice!! That alone makes it worth it, right? But seriously, for anyone who stays busy and on the go, it is a valuable tool to have. I'm finding it is so much easier to send text messages with the qwerty keyboard and even easier than other BlackBerrys that have the qwerty but each letter has to share a button. Thanks to Erin for her help with a novice at these things and making my decision to purchase easy and comfortable and helping me get a good value for my money. If you've been thinking about a Storm, I would highly recommend it.
No game this past Saturday (Valentine's) playing again this Saturday. I've been a little under the weather , so I could be a game-time decision as they say in the big leagues. Thanks for reading!
Hey out there in Dothan Voice land! I wanted to go ahead and wish all the DV members a very Happy Valentine's Day tomorrow. Hopefully we will all be spending most of our time with special one's in our life tomorrow, so I decided to send out wishes tonight. Myself , I will be spending the day with a very special young lady...my daughter. I am pretty involved in Upward basketball at my church and tomorrow I have to give a devotion at halftime of one of the games. With it being Valentine's Day, my topic of course will be love. I'm not gonna go into detail about my 5 minutes of time, but will leave you with the main focus of my devotion. Let's remember on this Valentine's Day the greatest gift of love and sacrifice ever displayed in history when Jesus gave his life for us so we may have everlasting salvation. Again, Happy Valentine's Day to you all and have a wonderful weekend!!
On Tuesday, February 10, Dothan Voice participated in the annual Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce Spotlight on Business. In my past work in the sign industry I was fortunate enough to be involved in many Chamber activities including Spotlight, and was even on the Chamber's Small Business Committee which assists with putting on the event. As every year, this was a great event. Being it was the first time I had participated in a few years, it was great to see old friends and make a few new ones. We had a wonderful time at our booth, and the Dothan Voice Girls did a great job helping sign up new members. I hope that all of our members take notice of our sponsors on this site, many of which are Chamber members. Take the time to get to know who they are and support their business, as they support our site and help keep it running.
Basketball update: I did play Saturday night and did avoid even minor injury. Played pretty well, actually. I"m not doing to bad for an "old guy" amongst 20-35 year olds.
Well, since I now have a blog, I guess I should write something other than when I'm in the poker room. I'm not much of a writer, but if I have a blog, I guess I should write about something. It's Saturday, and tonight I have another basketball game. I love basketball , but at age 44 I figured my league days had ended. But yet again, I was coerced into playing. Hopefully I'll make it through the season with no serious injury. I was fortunate last Saturday to make it through the first 47 minutes 50 seconds safely. Then trailing by six I hoisted a three pointer with a hand in my face. Instead of just concentrating on making the shot, I tried to draw contact and get 3 free throws. In doing so, I landed funny and turned my ankle. Luckily , it wasn't too bad and I kept it up and wrapped with ice all that evening and no harm was done, and I am able to play again tonight.....of course until foolishing forgetting I'm no longer 25 and go at it too hard. Hope you enjoyed my little rambling ...let me know what you think and I'll post other little tidbits about myself.
